Tonight, the DC Dads Group volunteered at Franconia United Methodist Church to pack bags for people who are disadvantaged at this time. This was our first time volunteering as a group and bringing our kids to an event since the group was started in February 2019.
The volunteer organization’s name is Phoenix Rising. They provide food to disadvantaged people along the Route 1 corridor.
The volunteer session is broken up into a two-day activity. Day one we pack bags and day two, we deliver the bags along Richmond Highway.
On day one, brown paper bags are packed with various food items. Minus the two slices of bread and one peanut butter and jelly sandwich, the rest of the items in the bag are shelf-stable. The bags are rolled up and placed in boxes for the delivery crew.
Eight dads attended tonight’s meet-up — five dads live in the Kingstowne area. One dad was new to the group because his schedule doesn’t allow him to attend our regularly scheduled events.
The session started at 6:30 pm, and we were out of there by 7:45 pm. Everyone looked like they had a great time, and no of the kids were crying.
We’ll add this activity to our monthly rotation.
